Observing the breathtaking beauty of the bridge across San Francisco Harbour today, it’s hard to imagine the fear and loathing caused by proposals for its construction.
The simple reason was that, because nothing quite like it had ever been attempted before, it was far beyond peoples’ imagination.
Proposals in the late 60s for an aeronautical venture spanning Germany, France, the UK and Spain met a similar reaction. Yet, only 25 years later, it’s possible to marvel at the exceptional progress and achievements of Airbus Industrie.
The company which started from nothing now supplies 80% of the world’s leading airlines with a family of state-of-the-art airliners. This includes the four-engined A340 with the longest range of any passenger aircraft.
Most significant of all, the unprecedented co-operation between the four European partners has become a model for all similar ventures.
Which goes to prove what EXTRAORDINARY THINGS CAN BE ACHIEVED when you build bridges that stand the test of time.
For many years the people of Bari, at the northern end of the ‘heel’ of Italy, endured Spanish occupation with good-natured equanimity even in the face of swingeing taxes imposed by the authorities on every concievable item.
However, in July 1647, the rulers overstepped the mark.
Desperate for fresh scources of revenue, they imposed a levy on the flour used in the making of the locals’ beloved pasta. What’s more, the Spanish soldiers, while inspecting the flour in the kitchens, took the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the women of the town.
Vicious street fighting ensued.
Whether the Italian is roused more readily regarding his pasta or his womenfolk is not for us to say.
However, it is beyond argument that it was a passion for pasta that prompted Guilia Buitoni to become the first commercial manufacturer of homemade pasta in 1827.
The Buitoni range today is one which we are sure Mama Buitoni would be proud of. It comprises all the well known pasta shapes, from the ‘flat’types of the North, to the Southern ‘tubular’ varireties, all made from 100% Durum semolina.
Which is the most authentic name in Italian food? Not even the Italians would be prepared to argue about that.
